Chapter News & Omegas: February 2018

Alabama (Alpha-Phi)
Gary C. Roberson (1981) died Jan. 31, 2018. He is survived by his wife Debbie, a former Lambda Chi little sister from Alpha Phi sorority, and three grown sons, Matt, Ryan, and Josh; and grandchildren, Ellie and Declan. Roberson was accomplished in marketing, human resources, and insurance, and has resided in Woodstock, Georgia for more than 25 years. He was very active and a leader in his church and will be greatly missed by his family and close friends.
Arizona State (Zeta-Psi)
Jerod Johnson was elected a sweetheart of Delta Gamma sorority and Zach Leibovit was elected the sweetheart of Pi Beta Phi sorority. Chapter members participated in the Delta Zeta philanthropy Duke Out, winning overall after winning the flag football tournament.
Arkansas (Gamma-Chi)
Chapter Advisor Rick George (1989) was featured in the Northwest Arkansas Business Journal as a member of the 2006 40 under 40 class. He works for J.B. Hunt Transport Services as a senior director of benefits. He and his wife, Shelly, have two boys, Logan, who is 21, and Spencer, who’s 19. Their sons are also members of Lambda Chi Alpha at the University of Arkansas.
Auburn (Omega)
Charles P. “Chuck” Hill died Feb. 15, 2018. He earned a bachelor of mechanical engineering from Auburn University and an MBA from the University of Chicago. He was a 32nd degree Freemason and was a member of many professional, charitable and social organizations. He had retired in 1996 after many years as a senior vice president in the Delta Faucets division of Masco Corp. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nell Hutton Hill, daughter Eloise (Ellie) Hill Klein, grandson Charles Klein, and granddaughter Margarett Klein. He was preceded in death by his daughter Margarett Hutton Hill.
Baldwin Wallace (Kappa-Phi)
Paul Peters (2018), a software engineering major, traveled to Florida to speak with donors of the university. The brothers went ice skating. James Philbrick represented Baldwin Wallace at the U.S. Hispanic Leadership Institute. Chapter brothers partnered with Alpha Gamma Delta sorority to raised 143 pounds of food and enough money to provide 660 meals to people suffering from hunger insecurity in the Cleveland area. Chapter Vice President Yonatan Rueven organized a brotherhood event that involved bowling and laser tag.
Bucknell (Delta)
During recruitment in February the chapter added 14 associate members.
Buffalo (Colony)
During formal recruitment, the chapter added seven associate members. With the university’s permission, chapter members painted bull outside of the Student Union to commemorate this milestone.
Butler (Alpha-Alpha)
Mark F. Uchida IV died Feb. 20, 2018. He was a network engineer for Angie’s List.
DePauw (Xi)
James A. Brandt (1954) died Feb. 6, 2018. He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Bliss in EI Paso, Texas after marrying his college sweetheart Carol (Rodebaugh). Upon leaving the Army, he joined his father-in-law in the family business at Angola Bottling Works in Angola, Indiana. He later accepted a position in sales and accounting at Mueller Co.
Eureka (Theta-Chi)
The chapter raised nearly $500 for a brother whose mother was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The campaign helped raise awareness for pancreatic cancer, which has lowest survival rate, is underfunded for research, and diagnosis often occurs when a patent is already terminal. The chapter has more fundraising events planned later in the semester.
Florida Tech (Beta-Nu)
The chapter earned the highest GPA on campus for the fall 2107 semester. Chapter brothers volunteered at Daily Bread to help with the food distribution and preparation.
Georgia (Nu)
Steven E. Fanning Sr. died Feb. 4, 2018. A member of the ROTC a the University of Georgia, he served as captain in the Vietnam War where he was awarded the Bronze Star with V Device and the Air Medal. He earned a Juris Doctorate Law Degree from Georgia and practices for 43 years Newnan, Georgia. He was elected to The Top 100 Georgia Super Lawyer’s List.
Idaho (Epsilon-Gamma)
The chapter added two associate members and placed fourth in grades, beating the all-Greek men’s Average for the sixth consecutive semester.
Johnson & Wales – Providence (Colony)
The chapter held a teddy bear sale for Valentine’s Day.
Kansas (Zeta-Iota)
Alex Hardwick is working with other students to design a remote patient monitoring solution for a diabetes company. John Flott, a member of ROTC, will be attending advance camp at Fort Knox this summer.
Kentucky (Epsilon-Phi)
John F. Fritz died Feb. 22, 2018.
Louisiana State (Upsilon)
Dr. Roland F. Samson Jr. died February 2018. He subsequently attended LSU Medical School in New Orleans and graduated in 1958. Roland was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and received the Sheard-Sanford Award for basic research in clinical pathology. He received specialty training and was certified in anatomic and clinical pathology in 1963 at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Roland spent two years in the U.S. Public Health Service in Seattle, Washington. He was a member of the College of American Pathologists, Society of Clinical Pathologists, and the American Association of Blood Banks. In 1965, Roland entered practice in Jackson, Mississippi, where he co-founded Sturgis-Samson Pathology Laboratory with his longtime friend and partner, Dr. George M. Sturgis.
Lycoming (Iota-Beta)
The chapter added 11 associate members, doubling its size. Chapter members would like to thank the alumni brothers and Nick Kobernik and Alex Martens from the International Headquarters for helping them be achieve a great result.
Stanley A. Baker Jr. (1966) died Feb. 26, 2018. He was married on Feb. 4, 1967, to the former Susan R. Reese. They celebrated 51 years of marriage together. Baker worked as a supervisor for LONZA and was a transport driver for numerous transportation companies.
Marshall (Colony)
On Feb. 10, 2018, the recolonization began an Associate Member Ceremony for seven associate members, assisted by the Zeta-Sigma brothers from the University of Louisville. Colony members also participated in a campus service event.
Millersville (Delta-Tau)
The chapter added four associate members.
Missouri Science & Technology (Alpha-Delta)
The chapter celebrated its 100th anniversary with a dedication of our a rebuilt chapter house.
Missouri State (Beta-Psi)
On Feb. 10, chapter brothers hosted a philanthropy event benefiting a local teenage girl, Shay Clayton, who is battling bone cancer. The event raised nearly $5,000.
Montevallo (Sigma-Epsilon)
Jack Colley died Feb. 16, 2018. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 18 years and a loving father to all three of his daughters. He was a wonderful “Poppy Jack” to all 5 of his grandchildren. He was an accomplished tennis player at the University of Montevallo, where he earned his degree in marketing and fulfilled it with 42 years of diligent service.
New Hampshire (Alpha-Xi)
The chapter held an Associate Member Ceremony for 17 new members. On April 28, 2018, the chapter will its centennial anniversary. Alumni brothers and guests are invited to attend. Please visit the chapter’s website for more details.
Norman J. Burgess died Feb. 18, 2018. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree and went on to teach the 5th grade at the Temple Street School in Nashua. Norman later taught Social Studies at the Elm Street School until his retirement at the age of 59. In addition to teaching, he coached basketball, baseball, and football teams at both the middle school and high school level.
North Carolina State (Gamma-Upsilon)
Gregory A. Leach died Feb. 17, 2018. He was employed as a mechanical engineer throughout his career.
Kenneth E. Stroud died Feb. 21, 2018. He then enlisted in the US Army, was commissioned a Warrant Officer, and served his country in Vietnam. A Vietnam Veteran, he earned three Bronze Stars for valor and the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service.Upon his return, he married Sheri Ratick and the couple moved with the Army to Omaha, NE then to Washington, DC where he continued to serve as a CID Special Agent with the Criminal Investigation Command. Ken left active duty in 1974 to begin an impressive career with the federal government, first with the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) as Special Agent, then with Housing and Urban Development (HUD) where he rose to Regional Inspector General for Investigations, Federal Region II, New York, New York, which covered many surrounding states as well as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, and ultimately with the Department of Commerce where he was the Regional Inspector General for Investigations and Headquarters Operations. Ken retired in 1988, but continued his service until 2010 as a white collar crime expert, lecturer, and consultant for international security, law enforcement and intelligence operations.
Northern Colorado (Sigma-Omega)
The chapter held two brotherhood events, including a Fornite tournament. The chapter also started a brother of the week program and a new scholarship initiative with five fantasy teams with seven brothers on each team.
Ohio (Alpha-Omega)
E. Dennis Ross died Feb. 9, 2018. Upon graduation, he immediately was selected by IBM to join their retail marketing team focusing on technology systems in the areas of wholesale and retail distribution. He quickly ascended the corporate ladder as an expert in Retail Information Systems. He became a recognized international leader in information systems becoming senior vice president/chief information officer of Home Depot, and part of the leadership team taking the company public in 1984.
Old Dominion (Sigma-Iota)
Vernon G. Harrison died February 2018. He was employed as a regional sales manager by Viking Life-Saving Equipment.
Pennsylvania (Epsilon)
Chapter brothers traveled to New York City to network with alumni. The trip included visiting museums and dinner in Midtown.
Lt. William Kent Cooper, Jr. passed away January, 27, 2018. He served as the project manager that built Dulles Airport for Eero Saarinen. He was also one of the chief architects on the Vietnam Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.. He is survived by his son and daughter, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Richmond (Alpha-Chi)
Chapter brothers Jared de Perio and Craig MacDonald led the University of Richmond Club Hockey to a win over Northern Virginia Community College to secure the East Coast Colonial Hockey Association Atlantic Conference Championship. The win caps off a dominant 20-1-1 season. De Perio also serves as president of both the University of Richmond Club Hockey Team and Club Lacrosse team.
San Diego (Delta-Kappa)
John M. Curtin died Feb. 20, 2018.
South Dakota Mines (Pi-Mu)
The chapter conducted an Associate Member Ceremony and Big Brother Ceremony for 12 new members. They also conducted several brotherhood events, including attending basketball games, a game night, and volunteering with Mines Buddies.
Southern Indiana (Phi-Xi)
Along with the Dean of Students Office, the chapter co-sponsored a Mustache for Consent awareness event. In addition, the chapter held a joint brotherhood event with Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity.
Valparaiso (Iota-Sigma)
The chapter held a Smash Hunger philanthropy event that included a single-elimination style video game tournament as well as as window painting contest. Thirty students participated in the tournaments and the event raised nearly 500 pounds of food and $100.
Western (Delta-Eta)
The chapter conducted a Big Brother Ceremony with the seven associate members.
Wisconsin-La Crosse (Colony)
Chapter members attended a Meet and Greek event that brought together fraternity and sororities to discuss better interaction, events and relationship building.
Wisconsin – Whitewater (Colony)
The colony added three associate members and conducted an Associate Member Ceremony attended by the university chancellor.
