Chapter News & Omegas: October 2017

The following are the submissions received for October 2017.

If you cannot find news from your chapter, then no information has been submitted for this month.

Alberta (Epsilon-Rho)

The chapter donated 467 pounds of food and nearly $400 to the campus food bank.

Arkansas (Gamma-Chi)

Paired with the women of Alpha Omicron Pi, chapter members participated in a homecoming float competition the  homecoming parade.  The chapter raised $20,000 for LifeSource, $250 for 7Hills, and a $250 for Full Circle Food Pantry. Chapter members also participated in a Halloween event at LifeSource, helping distribute candy to the children. During Watermelon Bust, the chapter collected 165,000 cans of food for the Northwest Arkansas Community. During fall recruitment, the chapter added 62 associate members.

Boston (Alpha)

Joseph M. Curley died Oct. 1. He is survived by his wife, Lauren, and daughters, Madeline and Margaret, of Cohasset, Mass., his mother, Christine Edda, of Clinton, Conn., father Peter Curley and his wife, Elaine Gordon, sister Jennifer Curley and her husband Peter Scotella, and their sons Matthew, Andrew and James, all of Westbrook, Conn.

Buffalo (Buffalo Colony)

Chapter members collected trash at Woodlawn Beach on the shores of Lake Erie. This service project was part of the Alliance for the Great Lakes Adopt-a-Beach project.

 

 

 

Central Missouri (Lambda-Pi)

Fifteen of the 21 eligible chapter members attended the Dean’s List dinner. The chapter ranked second academically among the 11 IFC member chapters earning a 3.2 cumulative GPA. The chapter is celebrating its 51st year at Central Missouri with 62 undergraduates and 1,317 total initiates.

 

 

 

Denver (Alpha-Pi)

The chapter added 43 associate members during fall recruitment. The new members are from more than 20 different states and two international students from London. The chapter hosted several social events, including a barbecue with  Gamma Phi Beta sorority and a mixer with Alpha Phi sorority. The chapter also hosted barbecue during homecoming/parents weekend that was followed by attending a varsity hockey game. The chapter is partnering with Hope in Our City, an organization dedicated to building relationships with refugees.

Eastern Michigan (Sigma-Kappa)

Several chapter brothers and family members attended homecoming festivities and tailgated ahead of the game against Western Michigan.

 

 

 

Georgia Tech (Beta-Kappa)

Joseph D.  Kelly died Oct. 28. He served 20 years in the US Army around the world including Washington, DC, Korea, Germany, Vietnam and Philadelphia. During his career, he received numerous accolades including the Legion of Merit, The Bronze Star Medal, The Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. After retirement from the army, he worked with Parsons, Brinkerhoff, and Tudor engineering Consulting firm in Atlanta until his retirement in 2001.

Hanover (Theta-Zeta)

James Selig died Oct. 3.

Idaho (Epsilon-Gamma)

The chapter collected 900 pounds of food for the local food bank in a bag drive. The chapter placed second among all fraternities in the homecoming competition.

 

 

 

Illinois

The chapter house was selected as the site for the start of the homecoming parade kickoff reception. Attendees included the university president, chancellor, deans, homecoming court and parade Grand Marshall Brandon Lloyd (middle).

 

 

 

Millsaps (Theta-Eta)

Max Harrigill and Tyler Hargrave were elected SGA Senior Senators. Noah Crosley was elected SGA Junior Senator. Ian Taylor was elected Executive Board Secretary. Vajresh Balaji was awarded the 2017 Outstanding Undergraduate Student Leader award by ACUI while brothers Max Harrigill and Kelley Gunn were part of the senior homecoming court.

 

Montevallo (Sigma-Epsilon)

The chapter hosted its annual Pumpkin Fest in addition to a bag drop seeking donations to Feeding America. This bag drop raised more than 1,200 pounds of food for the Shelby Emergency Assistant.

 

 

 

Northeastern State (Delta-Beta)

Kyle Bacon was named homecoming king. Seth Clark, Bryan Harris, and Connor Schapp (pictured left) were members of the homecoming committee. Alumni brother Matthew Ozturk represented his company’s accounting firm at Greek Life to Career Life event.

 

 

Oklahoma City (Theta-Delta)

On Oct. 21, the chapter played bubble soccer with Alpha Chi Omega sorority. The chapter built a homecoming float based on the TV show Friends.

 

 

 

Pennsylvania State (Zeta)

Chapter brothers held a watermelon bust philanthropy event that raised more than $131,000 for Feeding America. Numerous months of planning went into executing the event and with the help of the women from Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. The event included  five team activities revolving around watermelons with the winner team receiving life-sized watermelon trophy.

 

 

Shepherd (Phi-Iota)

The chapter added 16 associate members during fall recruitment.

South Dakota Mines 

The chapter held several recruitment events, including dodgeball, video/board games, and a social/hike with Alpha Omega Epsilon sorority. Chapter members are volunteering weekly at the local Humane Society and Feeding South Dakota. The chapter held an inaugural Night in the Cold to raise funds and awareness for the homeless. As a part of the event, the chapter invited students and the community to campus for dinner, yard games, raffles and the option to sleep outside.

Tampa (Tampa Colony)

At the October Grand High Zeta meeting, the colony was approved to charter.

Texas-Austin (Alpha-Mu)

George F. Sears died Sept. 13. In 1959, he joined the US Navy and served during the Vietnam War. He climbed to the rank of Captain during his 26 years of active and reserve duties.

Tulsa (Epsilon-Upsilon)

As part of fraternity education, the chapter visited the Muskogee War Memorial Park. More than 30 chapter brothers volunteered at the Eastern Food Bank of Oklahoma.

Western Carolina (Beta-Zeta)

The chapter added four associate members: Jay Hale, Neal Hutchins, Robbie Hallman, and Corey Keels. On Nov. 18, the chapter will hold an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for them. During Watermelon Bust, the chapter $830. The chapter’s flag football team is undefeated. Team members include: Alex Schnurr, Holt Underwood, Austin Whitaker, Todd Clark, Logan Watts, Jake Galloway, Dallas Griffin, Ryan Owens, Jake Morgan, Chad Baldwin and Neal Hutchins.

 

Western Kentucky (Lambda-Lambda)

The chapter earned first place in float design and second place during the homecoming events day.

 

 

 

Wisconsin-Whitewater (Lambda-Iota)

Chapter brothers won the Chancellor’s Spirit Cup for dedication and school spirit for their efforts during Homecoming Week 2017. Spirit points were distributed based on overall spirit, support of Homecoming, support of the football team, attendance during Homecoming activities, assisting with community service, positive energy, and enthusiasm at events. The chapter’s pride and school spirit were recognized by university staff, students, and alumni in attendance.
