High Alpha Summit Kicks Off With Keynote, Tour of IHQ

High Alpha Summit 2018 Day One

Lambda Chi Alpha’s High Alpha Summit [HAS] kicked off Thursday.

About 100 chapter executives braved extreme weather in many parts of the country to travel to Indianapolis for the three-day conference, which will help equip them to be great leaders of their chapters and colonies.

The Educational Foundation helps make the conference possible, providing scholarships to chapters and individuals who need it. About $60,000 in grants were provided this year.

The first day of the annual summit included a kickoff, the first of several small-group sessions and wise words from this year’s keynote speaker, Dick Thornburgh, who had a successful career as a global financial services executive.

“Becoming a leader is not easy, but learning to lead is easier than some may believe,” Thornburgh told the crowd. “What better world to try out your leadership skills than a fraternity?”

He shared with brothers five characteristics of a successful leader. The most important characteristic, he said, is integrity. Having it is how he survived the corporate world.

Another important piece of advice he shared with chapter and colony leaders: Multiple points of view are necessary.

“I wish I had learned sooner that multiple points of view result in better decision making,” he said. “On tricky issues, don’t surround yourself with people who think the same way you do.”

An alumnus of Gamma-Gamma Zeta at University of Cincinnati, Thornburgh has also been heavily involved in his communities, serving on several boards and in various other charitable roles.

To cap it off, day one of HAS included a late-night trip outside the city to tour International Headquarters.

Brothers in attendance said they are looking forward to three days filled with learning. They hope to take as much as they can back to their chapters and colonies.
