John Carroll Brothers Organize Hoops For Hunger to Raise Money for Hurricane Victims

Brothers at John Carroll University stepped away from traditional fundraising activities to help raise money for those affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, which devastated South Texas and South Florida respectively.

Members of the Lambda Chi chapter at John Carroll organized the first-ever Hoops for Hunger event last month. When they realized their campus community in University Heights, Ohio wasn’t doing much to aid in relief efforts following the two massive storms, they decided to take the leap and be agents for change.

Eight 3-on-3 teams signed up and participated in the basketball tournament, but the fraternity received other donations as well, raising about $250 for the Feeding America chapters in South Florida and Texas.

“Putting the money aside, I think it’s important that we, as Lambda Chi, really stand up and be a voice for those who don’t have a voice,” Brendan Sieber, High Theta, said.

Sieber felt called to help, he said, and it didn’t take much to get his brothers on board.

“I think it’s important that we’re trying to tackle the issues that affect the whole nation or the entire globe.”

This was one of the chapter’s more successful events, and it surprised them how easy it was to convince people to participate.

“Know your peers and what they want to do,” Sieber said. “We found that this was the best way the students at John Carroll could participate in a productive and meaningful way and get people talking about and interested in something that’s near and dear to our hearts.”

Jacob Schupp, High Alpha, encourages brothers across the country who may be looking for new ways to raise money for various causes to not doubt the simple events.

“Even though it may not be a super intricate philanthropy event,” he said, “it was still a super successful one and everybody had a lot of fun doing it.”
