Meet the 2018 Intern Group
With General Assembly just around the corner, we wanted to take time to showcase some of the key players behind the scenes that have made the summer a success. Let’s meet our 2018 interns!
Dylan Bateman (Harm Reduction & Education)
School: Arkansas State University (2016 graduate)
Year upon return: First-year graduate student at Florida State University
Major: Higher Education
Most looking forward to with the internship and GA: Throughout my time on staff, I have always served as a facilitator at our various conferences. This summer, I will get to help out with more of the behind-the-scenes tasks that keep things moving smoothly. I’m excited to get a different perspective with this new role.
How will this experience help you in your college career and after: I am pursuing a degree in Higher Education and will eventually work in the field of Student Affairs. Since fraternity is a part of that field, I think any the experience I am gaining as an intern, especially as it relates to education and harm reduction, will be relevant in grad school and beyond.
What knowledge do you hope to gain from this internship: I’ve had the opportunity to assist with various data related to harm reduction. I’m hoping that I gain some valuable knowledge related to analyzing data and working with Excel in a more efficient way.
Fun fact: I am halfway through my first Whole30 eating plan!
Matthias Ebeyer (Chapter Services)
School: Indiana University-Bloomington
Year upon return: Junior
Major: Biology, minor in Chemistry
Most looking forward to with the internship and GA: I’m very much looking forward to just seeing how it all works. Being a junior, I didn’t get to experience GA last time, because I wasn’t a member yet. Being able to observe and watch how it all goes down, how you get 192 chapters to get a delegate and be constructive with that, I think that is going to be a lot of fun, especially seeing it behind the scenes and being an intern is going to be very interesting.
How will this experience help you in your college career and after: Being a pre-med student, it’s a little strange to have a business internship. I really think this internship can help me if I do plan on either opening my own practice or being a surgeon. Having a business background can really help me know the financial side and the day-to-day work that doesn’t have to do with medical stuff.
What knowledge do you hope to gain from this internship: I want to remember that we are all part of something bigger than ourselves and the 200 men we have at our chapter. You don’t normally see all of the other chapters, so sometimes you can get lost in translation when all you see is your own brothers. So, just remembering the fact that there are a lot of chapters that are all just like us, and there are a lot of men just like us. We are not just the Alpha-Omicron chapter, but Lambda Chi Alpha as a whole.
Fun fact: I DJ in my free time.
Daniel Mayer (Executive Office)
School: Indiana University-Bloomington
Year upon return: Junior
Major: Accounting and Finance
Most looking forward to with the internship and GA: I’m really looking forward to seeing how the executive processes work for the Grand High Zeta and how people coordinate and communicate effectively to have such a robust General Assembly.
How will this experience help you in your college career and after: Having this experience through the executive perspective of the International Headquarters will benefit me greatly as a leader and will help me understand what it takes to run different organizations, such as a non profit, whether that is a higher education institution or something else.
What knowledge do you hope to gain from this internship: I want to learn how staff at International Headquarters think. It can be ambiguous what IHQ wants from us at times…,but I think as a leader, I can come to my brotherhood and really tell them what IHQ’s message is, this is how they can help us, and these are the benefits.
Fun fact: I was born June 11, my mom was born June 9, and my dad was born June 10.
Ian McFarland (Communications)
School: University of North Texas
Year upon return: Senior
Major: Entrepreneurship
Most looking forward to with the internship and GA: I’m excited to learn different ways to communicate through social media and journalism. I’m very comfortable with the still graphic design point of view, but I’m also learning a lot about writing and video editing. In terms of GA, I’m excited to see everybody come together and work as one body. We kind of talk about how we all have one thing in common, and that’s true when we all come together and work to achieve the same goals.
How will this experience help you in your college career and after: In my career, I want to do something along the lines of athletic administration, and a lot of that comes with being up-to-date on social media marketing and everything like that, so I think it’s going to be great to take the skills I learn here and use that in a future career, in terms of engaging with and audience as best as possible.
What knowledge do you hope to gain from this internship: I want to take back to my university some skills and relationships that I built here to help facilitate the process of becoming an actual chapter, which includes event planning and marketing, as well as making connections with the right people who can give us resources in the future.
Fun fact: My favorite food is spaghetti.
Julien Welvaert (Alumni Engagement)
School: Virginia Commonwealth University
Year upon return: Junior
Major: Accounting
Most looking forward to with the internship and GA: I really want to see how legislation is made, because it seems like a huge process. I have no idea how it happens, because I have never been to a GA. So, I would like to see how our new laws and policies are passed and created.
How will this experience help you in your college career and after: Before this, I had no idea what the difference was between running a non profit organization versus a classic for profit business. Working in alumni engagement has been pretty cool, because I kind of got here on accident, and I had not intended on working in this department at all, but it has shown me that I can apply my skills to different places that I originally hadn’t thought of before.
What knowledge do you hope to gain from this internship: I want to take back to my chapter a better understanding of the general fraternity on an international level.
Fun fact: I have two citizenships (United States and Belgium)
