Frequently Asked Questions
Joining Lambda Chi Alpha is an exciting time in your son’s life. But as parents, we understand that you probably have questions about your son’s membership, so we want you to know a little bit about our Fraternity.
First, fraternity membership is meant to complement, not detract from academic performance. It is Lambda Chi Alpha’s mission to lead a co-curricular movement and offer an experience that focuses on the maturational development of today’s college man. As such, it is the vision of Lambda Chi Alpha to extend itself beyond the traditional social fraternity in practice and principle.
In 1972, Lambda Chi Alpha became the first fraternity to abolish pledgeship and replaced it with Associate Membership. Lambda Chi Alpha believes in the value of every human being and has been a leader in promoting an anti-hazing culture throughout the entire fraternity and sorority community. This is reflected in our open motto, Vir Quisque Vir, translated means Every Man a Man. Associate Membership grants new members full rights of membership, including the right to vote and hold officer positions.

Lambda Chi Alpha is a private international, non-profit organization whose membership policies are non-discriminatory on the basis of color, race, creed, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, or disability.
Potential members must be regularly enrolled in an accredited college or university and must maintain an acceptable scholastic average. Academic standards are set locally but cannot be less than a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Although not a requirement, consideration is given to potential members who participate in campus and community activities.
Why should my son join a fraternity that embodies the type of behavior and antics in movies like Animal House or Old School?
Regretfully, pop culture and the poor behaviors of college men in the past few decades have stereotyped fraternity members as abusive, irresponsible partiers and hellraisers. In reality, fraternities are values-based organizations dedicated to the development of character and lifelong friendships. Lambda Chi Alpha encourages its members to exemplify themselves to the highest standards of a gentleman, to study hard so that they can reach their potentials, and to become involved in their campuses and local communities.
Lambda Chi Alpha has adopted policies regarding standards of conduct deal with issues such as alcohol, drug abuse, anti-hazing, regulated social events, women’s auxiliary organizations, required standards and fraternity education programs. In addition, Lambda Chi Alpha is a member organization of the Fraternal Information and Programming Group (FIPG), which is a consortium of men’s and women’s fraternities dedicated to standardized risk management policies across the country.
While Lambda Chi Alpha is a social brotherhood, our members are held to highest standards of behavior and stature. Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity does not condone the use of alcohol by minors at any time and takes a zero tolerance approach in doing so. Though our individual chapters may, and do, hold social functions, brothers are expected to uphold the laws of the city and state, as well as the guidelines of the university and Lambda Chi Alpha, at all times.
Lambda Chi Alpha condones no form of hazing by any alumnus, initiated member or new member. Such activities are not compatible with the ideals and traditions of the Fraternity and reflect negatively on the organization. Collegiate chapters and colonies are required to develop an educational program for all members that align with our Seven Core Values and in no way demeans, embarrasses or endangers any member or guest. If you son believes that activities in his chapter may constitute hazing, or if he feels in any way hazed by individual members, he should immediately contact his Educational Leadership Consultant or call the International Office at 317-872-8000. The safety of our members, along with upholding the local, city and state laws, is our #1 priority as an organization.
Chapters that fail to uphold any policies will be held accountable, which can lead to revocation of the chapter’s charter.
Lambda Chi Alpha chooses to make a positive difference in the lives of our members. Our continual goal is to provide an abundant supply of educational programming relevant to today’s college men—to add value and quality to their lives through their lifelong experience as a Lambda Chi Alpha brother. In keeping with this goal, Lambda Chi Alpha created the True Brother Initiative.
The TRUE Brother Initiative is a comprehensive development initiative that benefits new members, initiated members, and alumni of Lambda Chi Alpha. There are three main components of the TRUE Brother Initiative that reflect the stage at which a member of Lambda Chi Alpha is currently experiencing; with the foundation for the True Brother identity being formed by the Seven Core Values of Lambda Chi Alpha- Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Service and Stewardship, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage.
No longer satisfied with how false concepts and inappropriate stereotypes contribute to the modern day fraternity experience, Lambda Chi Alpha recognizes our Seven Core Values as the foundation of our brotherhood, and these values are fully incorporated into all aspects of operations. From the beginning of a man’s Lambda Chi Alpha experience, these values are instilled and cultivated through a tactical approach to values based recruiting. Additionally, our Associate Member program has grown through a demanding, but never demeaning, new member education framework focusing on a young man’s growth, maturation, and development rooted in these philosophical values. This immediately continues with the ongoing programmatic development of our initiated brothers by offering structured developmental experiences.
In addition to embracing core values and developing our brothers past initiation, Lambda Chi Alpha has made the shift to utilize the educational and developmental model in approaching all aspects of operations affecting our constituencies. For new members and active brothers to alumni, staff, and beyond, the model is rooted in concepts like mentorship and role modeling, growth from failure, commitment, and servant leadership. Greater benefits are in store when we recognize that our men are more likely to strive for success when they occasionally encounter obstacles and challenges and prevail or make mistakes and are coached through them in a learning environment.

Students often find managing their time difficult when moving from the highly structured high-school environment to the freedoms of college. Part of the new-member program is to assist in that transition by offering scholarship programs, which might include study partners, study hours and time-management workshops. Your son can access the network of brothers who already know how to use campus resources like the library, study-skills centers, computer labs and academic advisers.
A minimum 2.5 GPA is required for membership along with the expectation that brothers maintain positive academic standing at their respective institution. Our members are enrolled in higher education for the primary purpose of attaining a degree or several; it is an expectation set by the Fraternity that members achieve excellence in the classroom and in their everyday lives.
With a worldwide network of nearly 180,000 living alumni, Lambda Chi Alpha offers an extensive networking opportunity for its members – both during and after college. While we cannot guarantee job placements, Lambda Chi Alpha can expose your son to an incredible number of successful alumni who are leaders in all areas of business, education, arts, sciences, politics, technology and numerous other fields.
Each chapter is responsible for creating and maintaining its own budget. A number of factors may determine that cost, such as room and board, meals or other maintenance fees. However, the only costs the international headquarters mandates are a one-time $99 new-member fee and a $210 initiation fee; and once initiated, $78 member dues (twice a year) to remain on the chapter active roster.
In addition, we help protect our members through our liability insurance coverage and assess each man a risk management fee. The average cost is $125 per member per year. Please note, however, that members who breach our fraternity policies will not be covered under our insurance policy. Furthermore, chapters with multiple claims histories may be assessed a higher fee.
Participating in any worthwhile activity always requires an investment of one’s time. Research has shown that college students who are active in extracurricular activities are more likely to graduate and report greater satisfaction with their college experience. Through his fraternity involvement, your son should be able to learn how to balance his academic, work, campus/community involvement and social commitments.
Our best advice is this. Be supportive and learn as much as you can by asking questions of your son as he meets fraternity members and discusses his experiences. In the same way, it’s important for you to show interest in the path he has chosen and find out whether or not membership has guided him accordingly. If you ever have concerns, whether he communicates them to you or based on your own perceptions, you should contact us anytime at email@example.com or at (317) 872-8000.
If your son becomes a member of Lambda Chi Alpha, there are many opportunities for parents to become involved. Some of our strongest chapters have strong participation by mothers and fathers. This can include an active Parents or Family Club or being a member of the house corporation or advisory board. Parents can also assist by helping with organizing in Parents’ Day activities, House Improvement Day, homecoming activities, etiquette dinners or golf outings. We suggest talking to your son’s chapter directly for opportunities to get involved.

The mission of the Educational Foundation of Lambda Chi Alpha is to fund, develop and support values-based educational programs and activities, which will inspire a lifetime of personal growth, leadership, service, and deep fraternal relationships. The Educational Foundation believes in preparing and encouraging collegiate men of good character, high ethics, and noble ideals to contribute positively to the world in which they live.
The Lambda Chi Alpha Educational Foundation is a separate charitable and educational tax-exempt organization, separate and independent from the Fraternity, whose sole purpose is to serve as an educational resource for the brothers of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Dollars raised go toward educational programming and initiatives, such as the Stead Leadership Seminar and Lambda Chi Alpha’s TRUE Brother Initiative, to help build and invest in Lambda Chi Alpha’s future leaders.
One way parents and families can help support our Foundation’s endeavors is to make a donation in a member’s name. If you would like to make the gift in your son’s name or a member’s name, please enter his name and chapter in the comments section.
