Pulling in Donations: Akron Chapter Hosts Unique Annual Fundraiser

Gamma-Alpha Zeta at University of Akron has a unique way of raising money for its spring philanthropy.

They put a bathtub on wheels and push it down the main street in town.

Apparently, it’s tradition, although President Logan Blanchard is not quite sure how it all started.

The 49th Annual Bath Tub Pull is scheduled for April 21. The money raised will benefit The Akron Rotary Club and help fund a camp for children with special needs.

The chapter’s Crescent Queen will sit in the bathtub while the guys push her for five miles — from campus to downtown.

In addition to the actual event, they will also place the bathtub outside the Student Union for donations, ask companies in the area to donate, and set up a GoFundMe page, which is where most of the money for the philanthropy usually comes from.

“Given that we cannot pull our tub all over the country, we are respectfully asking you for a donation that will be used in helping the camp monetarily to help benefit the children’s experiences at the camp,” the page states. “We greatly appreciate any contribution that you make and we guarantee it will be a worthwhile endeavor.”

As for the event itself, the goal is to draw attention.

“It’s more about the idea of it,” High Alpha Logan Blanchard said. “I’d say it’s pretty comical.”

People line up down the street and cars stop at intersections, he said, usually because they’re confused.

“I know it probably looks pretty funny at first, but when we go up to them and explain what we’re doing, they get it,” Blanchard said.

They usually raise a couple hundred dollars during the actual event, he said. But every little bit counts.
