Top Ten Cities to Visit, According to Educational Leadership Consultant Alex Martens

by Alex Martens, Senior ELC

Every year, Lambda Chi Alpha has a number of consultants who travel through the United States and Canada to visit the over 193 chapters and colonies. Each year, consultants from all walks of life and different backgrounds experience new foods, locations and new people. Here are the top 10 spots the consultants experience while on the road:

10. San Fransisco, California
San Fransisco: the city of the Golden Gate Bridge, trolley cars, and Alcatraz. The city is a cultural hub for Northern California. It makes for a great get away!

9. Baltimore, Maryland
Baltimore offers a wide range of things to do that make it a great stop on the road. It has a wide range of museums and piers to explore and is home of the National Aquarium.

8. Nashville, Tennessee

The largest city and capitol of Tennessee, the city is colorful and well-known for its music. The city is nicknamed “Music City, USA” and is a great place to go for live music and great southern food! ELC Jonathan Gottwald stated, “It was very energetic and I left as a bigger country music fan.”

7. Asheville, North Carolina
This small town in western North Carolina is the the home of the largest private residence in the United States and sits in the Appalachian Mountains. Asheville is for those daring enough to get off the beaten path. It was great to hike through the trails, get to the top and watch the sunset over the mountains. It is a beautiful and peaceful place to get away from the city.

6. St. Louis, Missouri
St. Louis is the  home of the Gateway Arch, making it the gateway to the west. It is a great place for a weekend getaway. Visiting Forest Park, which contains the St. Louis Zoo, art museum, and history museum, is free. After Forest Park, you can check out a Cardinals game at Busch Stadium or a Blues game at Scottrade Center. Recruitment Specialist Brett Turner said, “St. Louis is such and underrated city. It is                                                                                                                     a place you’ll want to keep coming back to for more.”

5. Charleston, South Carolina
Charleston is a place for anyone who loves sea food, great cultural experiences with live music, art, and of course, history. Some of the top things to do in Charleston are visiting Fort Sumter National Park, walking along the Waterfront Park, and  seeing Rainbow Row. Make sure to visit Folly Beach- a vibrant island city that is great for outdoor thrill seekers and beach  goers.

4. Mt. Rushmore, South Dakota
Mt. Rushmore sits in Pennington County, South Dakota and is a national memorial, featuring the likeliness of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. While Mt. Rushmore is a little out of the way, and quite frankly, a little off the map, don’t let it stop you from seeing this marvel.

3. La Crosse, Wisconsin
When most think of Wisconsin, they either think of cheese or the popular sitcom, That ’70s Show, but Wisconsin has much more to offer. ELCs Chris Pockette and Zac Bell could be found seeing the beauty of the outdoors in the fall and capturing some great photos.

2. Virginia Beach, Virginia
This one is for all the beach goers! ELCs Taylor Krivas and Nick Kobernik kicked back on Virginia Beach with nice weather,  friendly people, and the Atlantic Ocean. The beach offers great sea food, wildlife, beach days, and endless sunny days. If you look hard enough, you may even find King Neptune! Kobernik said, “Taylor and I spent quite a bit of time walking the Virginia Beach strip (where the King Neptune statue resides), laying out on the beach, and we even caught a Norfolk Tides (minor league baseball game)!”. Be sure to grab a bite at Muldoon’s in Virginia Beach and the Handsome Biscuit in Norfolk. They are both fantastic, especially for breakfast. Virginia Beach is a great place to meet up with another consultant and relax before tour season hits full swing.

1. Indianapolis, Indiana
To bring us home (pun intended), nothing feels better than getting home and seeing your fellow brothers. Indianapolis is not only the location of International Headquarters, but it is known around the world as the Racing Capitol of the World, hosting  the Indy 500. Indianapolis is also second only to Washington D.C. for war memorials.
