The second day of undergraduates’ time in Nashville began with a chance to give back to the community. Brothers were invited to different locations where they experienced service in the form of such activities as sorting clothes and food for those in need and contributing to the preservation of the environment.

“I hope that they [Stead attendees] just see what a difference that they are making, understand the need that is out there, and that they have a passion from now on to reach out to the needy,” said Brittany Calhoun, Nashville Dream Center.

One of the locations in which members gave their time was the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. Aligning with the goals of Lambda Chi Alpha’s partnership with Feeding America, the experience aided members in seeing the impact of their time and effort. Brothers were tasked with sorting green beans from local farmers that would go out to those in need.

“It [the experience] helps us realize that it’s bigger than us,” said Josh Cote, Tampa Colony. “There might be people out there struggling for food or can’t make ends meet right now, and [we are] just helping them by doing this: easy.”

Upon return to Vanderbilt’s campus, attendees were asked to reflect on their time serving the Nashville community and what it meant to them.

Shortly after, the men were asked to reassess what they know about the hookup culture on college campuses through a presentation from Cindy Pierce, an author, speaker, and comic storyteller. Pierce challenged members to rethink how they stand up for themselves and their friends and realizing the danger of hookup culture.

“I hope that they make healthier choices when they are informed, slow down and take their time and choose carefully, and not succumb to all of the pressure they are getting through social media and their peers,” said Pierce.

The night concluded with a presentation from CEO Bill Farkas as he delved into what it means to lead with accountability.

Attendees are looking forward to one more wonderful day in Nashville.
