Simpson College chapter raise money to ease financial hardship for a fallen brother’s family
Brother and Simpson College student Jacob Hartvigsen passed away on Saturday, Feb. 20 from brain cancer, after battling the disease since October 2015.
In his memory, Thomas Kolbo and the Theta-Lambda Zeta of Lambda Chi Alpha have started a GoFundMe to relieve the financial burden placed on Hartvigsen’s family during this emotional time.
“The chapter takes this very seriously, we all miss the guy,” said Kolbo. “Jake was quite a unique person. He came into college after being bullied in high school, and he came in with a willingness to change and become a better man, he joined Lambda Chi with the intentions to grow as a person and we all grew with him. This is something we want to see this through to the end. We want to see that he continually gets that support and love he deserved. We were accepting of him and will always be.”
During October of 2015, Jake was beginning his 3rd year at Simpson College when a tumor was spotted in his brain. Jake soon underwent surgeries and radiation therapy to fight the tumor. In January, everything was thought to have been cleared when another mass was found on his spine. Surgery was performed again, and he was beginning to recover when the cancer came back. This time, the cancer was terminal.
In his continued support for his friend and brother, Kolbo added that the support for Hartvigsen’s family will be incredibly for a family that has lost and struggled so much.
“This is a guy that had so much going for him, if I could afford it, I’d get him a headstone of gold because it would match his heart,” said Kolbo. “His family definitely needs this support, I don’t want them to have to worry when they should be focusing on dealing with the grief of losing someone they loved so dearly.”
