Grand High Zeta announces new nominating process for 2016

By: Gregg D. Behrens, Grand High Tau

As Chair of the Board Development Committee, I’m pleased to announce that the Grand High Zeta has adopted an improved timeline for the nomination of candidates to the Grand High Zeta, to be implemented in advance of the 56th General Assembly in August 2016.

In nominating members of the Grand High Zeta, the Nominating Committee makes critical decisions that set the strategic direction of our Fraternity for many years to come. While the results of our nominating process have been uniformly favorable in the past, the Board has concluded that the previous practice of compressing the Committee’s deliberations into the final 72 hours in advance of the Committee’s report to the General Assembly imposes unnecessary time pressures.

The Board has reviewed our laws carefully, and we have concluded that our existing laws don’t require us to hold the Nominating Committee in abeyance until the Wednesday preceding the General Assembly. Rather, they allow us the flexibility to extend the Committee process over a more reasonable period of time in advance of the General Assembly to allow for a more deliberative effort.

The improved timeline adopted by the Grand High Zeta at its meeting on January 24, 2016 will be as follows:

By January 31, 2016, the Office of Administration will issue a call for nominations for positions on the Grand High Zeta, setting forth the skills and attributes being sought in nominees and the basic expectations of Board membership.

The nominations must be submitted to the Office of Administration by March 15, 2016. Also by that date the Grand High Alpha will have appointed a Nominating Committee of nine members with qualifications as outlined in our laws.

The Office of Administration will forward the nominations to the Chairman of the Nominating Committee, and the Committee will then begin meeting at times and in the manner prescribed by its Chairman, with a view to having finished its interviews and deliberations no later than April 15, 2016. On that date, the Committee will submit a slate of names to the Office of Administration, nominating one member for election to each Grand High Zeta position to be filled.

On May 1, 2016, the Office of Administration will communicate the Nominating Committee’s slate to all persons who were considered by the Nominating Committee.

No later than June 30, 2016, the Office of Administration will distribute the Nominating Committee report to all members of the General Assembly with franchise. The report will include (i) the recommendations of the Committee, (ii) the selection criteria used by the Committee, and (iii) the biographical information and the credentials of the nominees.

The process on the floor of the General Assembly will be unchanged, with the Nominating Committee issuing its final report at the afternoon session on Friday, August 5, 2016, with that report being tabled until the morning session on Saturday, August 6, 2016, and with floor nominations, if any, being handled as in the past.

The Grand High Zeta believes this more deliberative process will be fairer to the Fraternity, to the nominees and to the Delegates at the General Assembly. The Board Development Committee will continue to review our processes to make sure they always to serve the best interests of Lambda Chi Alpha and its Members.

We look forward to seeing you at the General Assembly in August!
