Brotherhood Never Requires Harm
Every Brother has the power to help create a positive, hazing-free chapter culture. It starts with understanding what hazing is, recognizing behaviors that put others at risk, and having the courage to act when something isn’t right.
A Longstanding Commitment to Doing Fraternity Differently.
Lambda Chi Alpha’s commitment to eliminating hazing goes back decades. Former Executive Director George Spasyk (Michigan, ’49) challenged traditional pledging practices and advocated for a fraternity experience built on dignity, equality, and meaningful education.
At the 33rd General Assembly in 1972, Lambda Chi Alpha adopted Associate Membership and Fraternity Education, replacing the term “pledge” with “Associate Member” and giving Associate Members the ability to vote on Chapter matters and run for office. The change helped establish a fundamentally different approach to the new-member experience and reinforced Lambda Chi Alpha’s commitment to an anti-hazing culture.

What is Hazing?
Hazing is any behavior that endangers someone’s physical or mental health or safety, or pressures someone to participate in harmful or degrading activities—regardless of whether they appear willing to participate. While hazing can happen in any type of organization and anywhere there is a power dynamic, below you will find some examples of types of hazing behavior in the new member process:
Busting Hazing Myths
“Hazing is just harmless fun.”
“Hazing makes us stronger as a group.”
“If you consent, it’s not hazing.”
The Impacts of Hazing
Hazing doesn’t just affect the person being targeted. It ripples out to harm the entire Chapter. The consequences can be emotional, physical, academic, and even legal. When hazing occurs, trust is broken, reputations are damaged, and the true values of Brotherhood are lost. Recognizing these impacts is essential to building a safer, more supportive Fraternity for everyone.
The consequences can affect individual Members, the Chapter, and the Fraternity as a whole:
- Emotional distress and mental health struggles
- Physical injury or illness
- Academic problems
- Loss of trust and respect among Brothers
- Legal and disciplinary consequences
- Damage to the Chapter’s reputation and future
Build Belonging, Not Barriers.
Healthy Brotherhood is built intentionally. Positive chapter experiences create connection, trust, and a sense of belonging without requiring anyone to prove themselves through humiliation, pressure, or harmful traditions. These practices give Members meaningful ways to grow together, support one another, and build a stronger Chapter.
